Beaches and nature around Cabrera

Most people come to Cabrera for the coast, so here is the coast without the brochure gloss. Each place below is real and reachable, described the way a neighbour would describe it — what it is, how you get there, how far, and who it suits.

    01

    Playa El Diamante.

A small cove backed by cliffs, with shallow, calm water that reads like a natural pool. You reach it down a steep rock staircase of about a hundred steps, so it rewards a bit of legwork and is not for anyone with limited mobility. It sits in Cabrera itself and is popular with local families and residents — quiet on weekdays, busier on Sundays.

    02

    Playa Grande.

About a 1 km crescent of golden sand under palm-topped cliffs, roughly 10 minutes east of Cabrera. This is the surf break, not the swimming beach: the waves that make it one of the most rated beaches on the north coast are exactly why you respect the water here. The Playa Grande Golf & Ocean Club and the Amanera resort sit on the clifftop above it. Go for the view and the swell; do not treat it as a gentle bathing beach.

    The caletones.

Playa La Entrada and the three El Caletón coves — El Caletón de Darío, El Caletón del Medio and El Caletón Chiquito — are the local swimming spots. Smaller, sheltered, and closer to how Cabrera actually lives; these are where residents take the kids on a hot afternoon.

    04

    Laguna Gri-Grí.

A mangrove lagoon with caves in Río San Juan, about 15 km west of Cabrera. It is a protected ecological reserve reached mainly by boat, and it is the signature natural asset of the Río San Juan side of the coast.

    05

    Cabo Francés Viejo National Park.

Coastal cliffs, trails and a headland at El Bretón, in Cabrera itself. This is protected coastline — it will not be built on. Mar Cabrera runs boat tours out of Cabrera along this park's shoreline.

    What this is not.

There are no beach clubs, no lifeguards, no rows of serviced loungers, and nobody renting you an umbrella by the hour. You bring your own shade and your own caution. The water here is Atlantic — know your limits before you swim, and if you are not a strong swimmer, stay with the caletones, not the surf break.
